Last weekend I shot an exhibition of the work of photographer Ken Penn aka Kencredible at Amberella Sugary & Sweet.

Semiopticon Opening

So it's not quite the Sistine Chapel but it is one hell of an eye-opening, religious experience, that is of course if your God is Alfred E. Neuman of Mad Magazine, whose large head presides over the room filled with many other recognizable characters. Entering into the space of black and white donned walls, images are fused together in a seemingly nonsensical order. The combination of present day pop-culture symbols and iconic imagery is a journey for the eyes, mind and soul. Art enthusiasts and Drexel University locals filed into the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery yesterday evening in hopes of gaining some insight into artists Morgan Thomas and Thomas Buildmore's mindset for their Semiopticon: Exploring Semiotics, Sacred Ground & Street Art, installation. August 12th, 2009.

So Percussion : Part Two

I visited So Percussion again recently - on July 30th, 2009. This time it was for images of a new program they've started - the So Percussion Summer Institute. These are some of my favorite shots from the day.

So Percussion : Part One

In February of last year, I was asked to shoot photos for a percussionist group called So Percussion at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. They play elaborate/intricate pieces of music with teacups, pieces of wood, flowerpots, toys, etc.

On their debut CD, the four members of So Percussion prove that they can really play. Not just play their instruments--which they do with expertise--but play with the genuine freshness and wonder of kids with their favorite toys. Here, their playthings are dizzyingly virtuosic pieces by two restlessly inventive American composers, David Lang and Evan Ziporyn. Lang's "The So-Called Laws of Nature" is a complex matrix of ever-unfolding rhythmic patterns, articulated by instruments that include giant metal pipes and flowerpots. Ziporyn's "Melody Competition" takes its structural cue and sonority from his specialty, Balinese gamelan, resulting in a piece that extends from hypnotic delicacy to potent muscularity.
